Trade Colours
For many centuries, gemstone traders have been using certain terms to describe the outstanding colours of specific gemstones. These “trade colour” terms are used by much of the gem trade for a certain quality of gemstone, mainly describing a certain hue, but also implying other quality criteria, such as transparency, size or the presence or absence of treatments.

Although these trade colour terms are well known and commonly used in international trade, there are often slight variations in their interpretation. In addition, geographical variations as well as historical evolutions have to be considered.

For almost 80 years, the Gubelin Gem Lab has been studying the history of trade colour terms and closely observing their evolution. Having undertaken considerable research into mining areas, the trade and historical literature, we have established a consistent definition of several trade colour terms for corundum. We have also defined strict criteria and procedures to test if a stone falls within the defined range, by applying several traditional and advanced techniques. These procedures prevent any ambiguity related to these terms and uphold the rigid standards for which the Gubelin Gem Lab is known in the gemstone industry.

In addition to the colour, there are further significant parameters which must be complied with if a gemstone is to qualify for a “trade colour call”: natural unheated rubies and sapphires only; both faceted and polished stones are acceptable, as are gems showing an asterism, although high transparency is required; rubies need a minimum weight of 1.00 ct, sapphires must weigh at least 3.00 ct.
